9 May 1871 — Granada
Tuesday. 9th [May 1871]. We breakfasted in the garden. Henry went out with Mr Fortuny but I stayed with Isabel & worked. After 1 o’cl: Henry & I & Fortuny went in a carriage to the house. We went to the house of the Agent of the Palavicini house where there is a very curious ceiling of the time of the Catholic Kings & we saw the soi disant sword of Boabdil. I am told that it is a copy, the original having been taken by the Duc de Luque & the copy left instead. We then went to a house of the same people called the Cuarto Real– There is a Moorish room but it is kept in a very bad state—a kind of warehouse for wood & old furniture. There is also in the garden a very fine kind of arbour made of olive trees trained in an arch wh is supposed to be of the Moorish time. We went to the Cathedral & there found the cannons for whom we had letters & they were very civil & showed us all we wished to see. They shewed us some embroidered red velvet vestments wh I think are even finer than those of Toledo. They also brought out of its case the jewel casket of Isabella la Catolica & their missal– We then went to the bank & to the Capt. Genl’s & then returned here– The Torres came to call just before dinner & brought old Mrs Riaño to see us. After dinner we had some music & I sang a great deal.
