8 May 1871 — Granada
Monday. 8th [May 1871]. We breakfasted at 9½ & soon after took a little carriage & drove down into the town. We went to the Capilla Real & saw the tombs of Ferdinand & Isabella & to the sacristy to see some other things. There we found Ricardo Madrazo sketching. We then finding none of the canons went to pay some visits to Mr Riaño’s mother & also upon the Torres who called on us & we left cards on the Capt Genl & then we came home & had some luncheon. Afterwards Henry & I went to call on Sr Contreras & found he was at dinner so we went away & strolled abt till we met Sr Contreras & he took us up the Torre de la Vela where there is a magnificent view of Granada & the surrounding country. We then hurried home as we had to dine at 6. After dinner we had the Captain of the Gipsies to come & play the guitaro & sing to us. He played wonderfully well & it is astonishing to see what may be made of the instrument. Afterwards Isabel Madrazo sang and then I sang a little—till the Ely party went off to the train & we separated.
