7 May 1871 — Granada
Sunday. 7th [May 1871]. at 4 in the morng & by the time we got to bed it was nearly 5 & I had some tea & went to sleep. We got up at 11 & after breakfast the Director of the Alhambra Sr Contreras came to see us & we went at once to the Alhambra. I was immensely delighted with it. It is beautifully kept & some parts are very skillfully restored by Sr Contreras. We walked abt till 5 & then came home. We found Isabel Madrazo staying here & made acquaintance with her sister, & brother in law the celebrated artist Fortuny & a young brother of Isabel’s. We had a visit from a lady & gentleman of the name of Torres who said they were friends of Emilia Riano’s & she had sent them to see us. At 6 we dined & I sat next to a Mrs Hoffman an American lady who introduced herself to us– Her husband is 1st Secy at Paris with Mr Washbourne & she is travelling with her son. After dinner we sat out while a man played a guittare. Saw then Mr Stewart Mackensie, Mr Ogle & Lord Ely. They invited us to go with them to the Alhambra which they were going to light-up with Bengal lights. We went all at 9½. The effect was beautiful. As we sat in the 1st Court in the dark to see the opposite side suddenly lighted up with a red tint & reflected in the water in front– They lighted up all the principal Courts & we were enchanted. It seemed like fairy land. We did not return to the hotel till after eleven o’cl:
