13 May 1871 — Granada | |
Saturday. 13th [May 1871]. At ¼ 4 I got up—we had a hasty breakfast & we drove in pouring rain down to the town to join the diligence which started at 5 for Mengibar. We had taken both coupés & had it been fine intended to have gone in the top one– However as it was wet we stayed below. It rained most of the time– The country was rather bare going over the mountains but on the other side we came to some lovely scenery & a beautiful gorge. We got to Jaen abt 2 owing to the roads being so heavy & therefore had no time to stop there & could not go to the cathedral as we had hoped to do. It seems fine outside & very like the one at Granada. Murray says there is nothing much worth seeing inside. At abt 5 we got to Mengibar—& it was still pouring. We got our dinner & had some time to wait for the train as it was 1½ hours late. However when it came we found that a compartment had been kept for us & we made our beds & settled for the night. We were a good deal disturbed on acct of people constantly trying to come in & the train was tremendously full of people going up to Madrid for the fair of St Isidro wh is tomorrow. | |
