31 May 1871 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 31st [May 1871]. Busy all the morning practising & writing; at lunch I got a note from Eliz: saying she & the child were ill. So at 4½ I went off leaving Mr Ff:, who called, with Henry. I found Eliz: in bed in one room & the child in the next. I sat with her & read a good part of Tennyson’s “Enid” to her– After 6 the carriage fetched me & I hurried home & dressed for dinner & we went off to dine with the Duke de Hernan Nuñez. His wife is in London & so his mother Princess Pio did the honors. There were also the Vega de Armijo’s, Rios Rosas, Canovas, Nicholas, Palmaroli & others dining there. We dined in an alcove in the winter gardens or hot house & it was very pleasant, the azalias were still out & the scene was very pretty. At the end of dinner we had a serenade of guitars—13 men played all the evening. It made the evening go off much less stiffly and we stayed till 11. A good many people dropped in in the evening. | |
