30 May 1871 — Madrid
Tuesday. 30th [May 1871]. Busy morning practised—wrote & drew. Clarita came after lunch. At 5 we drove & I left Henry at the Cortès & went to see Eliz: whom I found ill with face ache– I then went back for Hy & he said there was great excitement abt the debate upon the determination of the Govt to give up any French Communist refugees who came to Spain. He took me up but on getting there we found it just over– We took our turn in the Fuente & then went to leave cards on the D of Tetuan. It is the custom here to leave cards on the Majordomo in compliment to the King whose birthday & wedding day it is today. We dined alone & I sang.
