16 June 1871 — Madrid | |
Friday. 16th [June 1871]. We were busy packing but managed to go at 12 to the Presidencia to take leave—found the Dss ill in bed– We returned home & finished our preparations. Mr Ff came to lunch & accompanied us at 5 to the station a lot of friends came to see us off—Mme Canitz & 2 Aylton girls, Eliz: & Mr de Mar: Dubsky, &c &c. At 5.30 we started for Avila & got there abt 9.30. Giovanni who had gone on in the morning met us & we were met by Silvela’s hommes d’Affaires, Mr Lunas, & the Govr of the Province. They left us at the Fonda de Dos de Mayo & said they would come tomorrow at 10. The Fonda is kept by Don Juan Smith & his wife & married daughter. Don Juan was a navvy on the railway & made his fortune & has a good deal of property in Avila. We had plain but clean food & good beds & were very well pleased. | |
