17 August 1871 — Brussels
Thursday. 17th August [1871]. Directly after breakfast we were off to the station where was a great crowd of people going on to Cologne. Tho’ Henry rushed at a carriage as soon as the train drew up to the platform we found every carriage was full in a twinkle & we sat down mournfully on our bags & wraps not daring to believe an official who assured us that another train would leave in 5 minutes– In a moment of inspiration Alice asked why we should not separate & the ladies go in the carriage of the “Dames seules” & Henry & Arthur with the “Fumeurs” & so we bundled in & got places. On arriving at Liege the 2 ladies who were in our compartment got out so we hailed Arthur & Henry, took the placard with the word “Dames” off our carriage & all went on together to Cologne. On arriving there I & Mrs B. Hill & Arthur drove off to the Disch hotel. Having telegraphed beforehand for our rooms we were happy eno’ to get taken in. There were such crowds of travellers and a great many were turned away. We had some dinner & went to bed early.
