31 August 1871 — Lienz | |
Thursday. 31st August [1871]. We started abt 7½ in the morning & posted by Sillian & Innichen over to the Dolomites mountains & went by the magnificent Ampezzo pass. At Landro we found a diligence just going over it & so we transferred ourselves & our luggage onto it. It was a lovely evening & we had a beautiful sunset. The Dolomites have a most wonderful & striking effect the 1st time one sees them. The great sharp peaks rise grandly on all sides most of them tipped with snow & tinged a pinkish colour by the action of moisture on the soft stone which is very scaly & from constantly peeling off makes the peaks look sharp as needles. We stayed at Cortina at Ghedina’s Inn the Aquila Nera & were very comfortable. | |
