1 September 1871 — Cortina
Friday. 1st September [1871]. We meant to have ridden over the Dolomites to Caprile but we found there was only one lady’s sidesaddle & that was engaged for today so Henry & I took a little carriage & drove down the valley to Venas where we changed the horse & we drove on to Tai Cadore. We ordered some lunch & then drove on another mile to Pieve di Cadore where we spent 10 minutes. We went into the church where are 2 or 3 pictures said to be Titians & then went & saw the house where he was born which is a rather poor house in the village. We then drove back (we were driven by a youthful coachman who owned to being 10 years old!) to Tai Cadore & luncheon there & then to Venas where we got our old horse & driver (young Ghedina) & got back abt 6 to Cortina. We had a little rain en route & there was a storm in the eveng. We had lots of letters from Eng: & from Mrs Burr saying that as soon as Arthur could be moved they were going back to England & had given up all idea of joining us again at Botzen.
