2 September 1871 — Cortina
Saturday. 2nd September [1871]. There being only one side saddle we were obliged to leave Hill at Cortina & Henry & I set off abt 7. Henry rode & I drove for the 1st 3 hours till we came to an Hospice where the carriage remained & the poney was saddled for me to ride. We stopped at Andraz & in the tiny inn there eat our luncheon wh we had with us & Henry got some excellent beer. We thence went on over the Tre Sassi pass where we had a view of the Marmolada & seemed to be in the middle of the Dolomite mountains as tho’ we were in the bottom of a huge cauldron. We found our messenger had secured our rooms at Caprile. Met there Mr Winterbottom & his sister Mrs Weidon & a cousin Miss Leonard. Also 2 Mr Milmans—sons of the Dean. After my 4 hours ride I was tired & went early to bed.
