3 September 1871 — Caprile
Sunday. 3rd [September 1871]. After breakfast we started with the Messrs Milman for the lake of Alleghe. We went by the right bank which is thro’ a pine wood & tho’ steep is very pleasant riding. My horse Fuchs a little red poney became restive & it being discovered the saddle hurt him mine was transferred to Henry’s white horse Schimmel by name. At the head of the lake we parted with the Milmans who continued their walking tour. We returned by the other bank of the lake to the village. We got there just as the whole population were coming out of church. They seemed nice & clean people. The women with their laced bodices & round felt hats & the men with carnations stuck in theirs. We had our lunch in our bag & we asked permission to sit on the balcony of the [illegible word] house to eat. Henry went & paid a visit to the curé an old friend of his & I waited on the balcony. The room inside soon became full of villagers who took their midday bread & beer & while we were eating our lunch they entertained us with Tyrolese choruses. The view where we were over the lake with the little church in the foreground & the great Dolomites behind was very picturesque. We had a hot ride home getting to the inn at 4½ & we sat & read & wrote the rest of the eveng & talking with Mr Winterbottom who is Under Secy of State.
