4 September 1871 — Caprile
Monday. 4th September [1871]. We started abt 7 to ride back to Cortina & had a lovely ride tho’ a very precipitous one. We went back a different way to the one we came by & ascending to Sta Lucia had a lovely view of Monte Civita. The road was very bad & steep in some places & ½ way up one of the steepest pitches my saddle began to turn round & I was obliged to clutch hold of Ghedina & jump down– After this whenever there was a very bad place I got off & walked– When we were going up among the pinewoods we met a girl with a milk pail & told the guide to ask her to give us some. She answered that she would if we paid for it wh we of course said we had meant & she poured out some into the lid of the pail wh I drank off & Henry had a lid-full. This refreshed us & kept us going till we got nearly to the summit of the pass where were 2 or 3 huts used by the people who were making hay on the slopes. At the top hut we stopped & sitting in the shade of the hut on a couple of three legged stools we eat the cold chicken & bread we had with us. The man of the hut also gave me some milk & fetched us water from the stream & the horses & guides also had their food. We stayed abt 1½ hour & then went on reaching the top in ¼ hour. We had a most lovely view of the Marmolada—the principal Dolomite & had a great many more pointed out to us whose names I forget. The descent was rapid & we were often obliged to get off & walk down but we soon got into the pinewoods & found lots of flowers & strawberries. At abt an hour from the bottom we found the little carriage awaiting us & Fuchs was harnessed into it & we drove down to Cortina getting there abt 4 o’cl: We got several letters.
