5 September 1871 — Cortina
Tuesday. 5th September [1871]. We got up at 4 in the morning & at 5 started in the Dilly to go over the Ampezzo pass. It was a lovely morning & we saw the sunrise wh was well worth seeing & was very pretty. The highest peaks seemed to catch fire one after the other. We got to Niederdorf abt 9½ & then got a carriage & posted to Brixen. We had a lovely drive & got there abt 6 & meant to have left our things at the station & walked into the town. A storm had been brewing all the afternoon & just as we got near the station rain overtook us so we remained in the station & got some dinner at the buffet. As our train did not leave till 8 we had plenty of time to watch the storm in the mountains round & to play with a young fox wh was kept in a cage in the garden over wh was a kite in the upper part. The little fox was a pretty little creature the man told us it was only 3 months old & was quite tame. It allowed the man to scratch its head & played with him just as a dog would. At 8 we got into the train & in 1½ hour we were at Botzen & went to the Kaiser Kron Hotel which was very comfortable & being tired with my long day I was soon asleep.
