6 September 1871 — Botzen
Wednesday. 6th September [1871]. We hired a carriage to take us as far as Bormio in 2 days & abt 9½ we started—have a stolid old German in a blouse as driver. We stopped to dine at Meran which is the place where people go for the “whey cure” & for the “grape cure”. We went to the Goldner Adler where we had an excellent dinner & afterwards we took a little walk in the town; we found ourselves in a narrow street with arcades on each side. The path under the arcades was boarded & the street abt ½ mile long. The arcades were lined with shops & we were glad to find one where I got a shady straw hat. We then went back & started off up the valley by Latsch & Eyers & arrived latish at Spondinig. It was very fine & we had a lovely drive by starlight & whiled away the time talking of the stars & watching for shooting stars. We luckily found rooms at the inn at Spondinig & it was very clean & comfortable.
