22 September 1871 — Florence
Friday. 22nd September [1871]. Miss MaCleod came down after breakfast to pay us a visit but we did not see much of her as Henry & I had to go in to Florence. We went to Sir James Hudson but he was too busy to go to the galleries with us so we went together to the Pitti Palace & thro to the other to give a look round at all the pictures. We then took a stroll on the Ponte Vecchio & round to Doneys. We had some luncheon & went on to pay a visit to Mme Caroline Sorelli & took her a present from Henry’s mother. We found her still confined to her bed & suffering also from a tumour in the head but she was very cheerful. We got back to the villa in time for 5 o’cl: dinner & we sat afterwards till nearly tea time in the billiard room with the glass doors open & enjoyed the fine evening & the moonlight. Monsignor Stonor had left this morning for Rome & we were alone with the Sloanes but as I had a headache I went to bed before tea time.
