30 September 1871 — Genoa
Saturday. 30th September [1871]. At 10 Sigr Morelli came to us & we went out together. We went to see the St Ambrogio where there are some good pictures a Guido & a Rubens. We went [to] an antiquity shop but found nothing we cared for. We came back to the Hotel to have our coffee. Henry bought me a brown silk dress like the one I had had for my wedding day. We sat at home for a couple of hours talking pictures with Sigr Morelli & then we went out & took a carriage & went to the Villa Doria where we went in to see the 2 or 3 show rooms. The entrance staircase & gallery are very prettily painted & done with Stucco ornament by P. del Vera. The gardens are very prettily situated & have a nice view over the town & in former days the Adl Doria was able to embark or disembark from the garden– Now a dock is being built wh has driven back the sea & spoils the look of the gardens, wh now stand high & dry instead of running down to the water. We returned to the hotel abt 5 & had a visit from the Weisweillers who were just starting for Milan. We dined abt 6½ & intended to have gone out to a Café afterwards but it came on to rain so we stayed at home & sat talking till abt 10 wh I went off the bed. We took leave of Sigr Morelli who leaves for Milan at 6 tomorrow morng.
