29 September 1871 — Genoa
Friday. 29th September [1871]. Woke rather late. Hill announced that the Weisweillers were in the hotel en route for Naples & Henry’s friend Sigr Giovanni Morelli was here having come as he had promised to meet us. While we were at breakfast abt 10 Signr Morelli came & at last I made acquaintance with Henry’s old friend. He is tall & well built with a pointed beard & moustache with a grave kind face & slightly grey hair. We started off to walk with him. He took us to the Palazzo Brignole where we saw 2 lovely Vandykes & a great many other good pictures; we also saw the Pictures in the Pal: Balbi where there are also 2 splendid Vandykes. We also went to buy me a black velvet & then we went to take some coffee at the Concordia wh is a caffé in the garden of the Balbi. We went to the cathedral & walked abt till after 3 when we came home & rested till the table d’hôte at 5½. Afterwards tho’ it was dark we went out & took a drive in a fly to the Acquasola & we got a little fresh air; we then went to the Cafe d’Italia & took coffee & ices under the trees. At 9½ Sigr Morelli went out & we went & paid the Weisweillers a visit & sat talking with them till bedtime.
