28 September 1871 — La Spezia
Thursday. 28th [September 1871]. We started at 9½ & drove over the mountains to Sestri just stopping for an hour midway to rest the horses & to get some lunch. The views when one comes upon the sea descending upon Sestri are very grand & it is interesting to trace the porphyry or lava streams which are traceable & show there must have once been a volcano there. We arrived at Sestri a little after 5 & got some dinner at the station. At 7.30 we got into the train & went to Genoa. It was a most lovely night & the moon was almost at its full so that one was quite able to see the sea coast on wh the railway runs. It seemed a most picturesque coast & the sea running rather high the waves rolled in grandly & the foam shone like silver in the moonlight. The railway ran now close down on the sands & now was high above the tall houses of the little towns we passed. One small town Sta Margarita I especially noticed wh nestled charmingly in a little miniature bay. We got to Genoa abt 10. We came in the carriage with a most lovely little lady of a perfect Greek type of feature—small with lovely hands. She was also very picturesquely dressed in grey silk with the black lace veil worn at Genoa. We went to the Hotel Croce de Malta. We found the hotel was moved from the old house of the Knights of Malta but it is a nice large house. We had some tea & gladly went to bed.
