27 September 1871 — Pisa
Wednesday. 27th [September 1871]. Breakfasted a little after 8 & then we went for a walk in the town– It was market day & very animated. A quack Dr was haranguing a crowd with a girl, whose tooth he had extracted sitting meek & pale in his carriage & there was fruit &c &c being sold besides wh the grain market was crowded. Walking back to the hotel we found an antiquity shop where we bought 13 little old Ginori ice cups for 10 fcs & carried them off in our pockets. At 11 we went to the station & took the train for Spezia where we arrived abt 1 & went to the Hotel Croce de Malta. We had a little luncheon & then went to take a walk in the town wh seems to be a very stirring growing little place & there were lots of soldiers & sailors. We were going towards the Arsenal when it came on to rain so we took to our heels & got home just in time to escape a very heavy shower. So we were obliged to sit at home & watch the vessels from our window & write till dinner. We dined at 5½ at the table d’hote. There were not many people– There was a Russian lady with 4 very Tartar visaged children who were dreadfully spoilt & who eat & drank anything & everything they liked helping themselves freely to wine.
