26 September 1871 — Florence
Tuesday. 26th September [1871]. We had made every preparation to start by 2.30 train to Pisa when we discovered that Henry had looked at the wrong railway guide & the train went at 12.30; we had therefore to start off almost directly after breakfast. We took leave of the Sloanes with regret & went on our journey Madrid-wards. We arrived at Pisa abt 3, got a little luncheon & then walked off to see the Duomo & the leaning tower wh is certainly a great wonder– We saw some (4) lovely pictures by Andrea del Sarto in the Duomo wh is most lovely inside & out. We went to the Baptistry where a baby was in the act of being baptised—all swaddled up laid on a pillow. Then we went to the Campo Santo & spent a long time looking at the lovely frescoes wh are all round the outside walls. We walked home by some of the streets of the town & dined at 6½. I am delighted with this town. It is so clean looking & has such a well to do air abt it with the Arno right thro’ the middle of it. We stayed at the “Grand Bretagne” Hotel wh is a fair one. We had plenty of mosquitos.
