25 September 1871 — Florence
Monday. 25th September [1871]. After breakfast we went into Florence with Mrs Sloane. Miss Macleod came down to breakfast & said she wd return after dinner. We dropt Hy at Sir James Hudson’s & agreed to meet him again at 3 & Mrs Sloane & I went & did some shopping– She took me to a shop on the Ponte Vecchio where a jeweller showed us a pearl necklace—3 rows for £3000—& other valuable things. After 3 we went & picked up Henry & then went to call on a Mme Dini a sister of Aurora Css Bourtourlin whom Henry had known when he was a child. She is an intelligent lively active fat little woman & spoke Eng: very well with the facility of all Russians. We then went back to Careggi in time for 5 o’cl dinner. After dinner all the T. Bowdwin party called & Miss Macleod appeared. When we were in Florence we called upon our old friend Cerruti (late Minister at Madrid). He was very unwell with face ache caught at the Mont Cenis fêtes. He said his marriage was broken off on account of the lady wishing him to go & live in America. He was delighted to see us.
