24 September 1871 — Florence
Sunday. 24th September [1871]. I had rather a headache in the morng so Henry & I sat writing, reading quietly in the sitting room. We then went out driving with Mr & Mrs Sloane & they took us to the Villa Christina to call on Miss Temple Bowdwin. We found them at home & found a Mr Mansfield there & Mrs T. Bowdwin (the brother’s widow) & another married sister of Miss T.B (Pss something.) They showed us over their house wh is more beautifully fitted up & kept up like an English country house & has lovely views from every window & balcony. We then took the Sloanes home & they sent us on in the carriage to pay our visit to Miss Macleod at the Villa del Pino. We had some difficulty in getting in as she had neither lodge nor bell & we had no key; at last just as we were going to turn away a little girl came with the key. By this time it was so near 5 that we had only just time to give a glance round the villa & taste Miss M’s “vino santo” & then hurry back to Careggi. I managed to get time to see the celebrated mat on wh Miss M. sleeps on the floor with a shawl over her. According to Mrs Sloane’s desire we took Miss M. down with us to dine at Careggi. Mr Fuller the Sculptor came out from Florence to dine also & we had a very pleasant eveng. At 9 Prince Justiniani & his little boy arrived from Rome on a visit. The boy is abt 10 & very intelligent. The Prince is a tall good looking man between 50 & 60.
