2 October 1871 — Alassio
Monday. 2nd October [1871]. We got up early & left Alassio at 8 o’cl: & drove thro’ the most lovely country of oranges, myrtles, lemons, palms & aloes. We had a lovely day very bright, but with rather a high wind. We stopped to lunch at St Remo at the Hotel de la Gde Bretagne very bad & very dear. After lunch Henry & I took a little stroll in the town but had not time to go far. I shd have liked to have gone further into the old town as I saw it was very quaint the streets being merely passages arcades under the houses & thus having little or no light. But we were obliged to hurry on in order to get to Mentone by 6. We got there just in time for the table d’hote at the “Victoria”. We were only abt 14 to dinner the season not having yet commenced. We met a Mr Cator & his wife & daughter that Henry knew & sat next them. Went to bed early.
