5 October 1871 — Cette
Thursday. 5th October [1871]. When I got up I found Hill in a sad state having been very sick & ill since 4 this morng. However we got her round & went to the station at ¼ to 9. Had to wait a good time for the train & Hill was not better so we took her 1st class with us. We had to change at Narbonne & got some lunch & abt 2.30 we arrived at Perpignan where Giovanni met us from Madrid. We went to the Hotel d’Europe & got settled & then went out for a walk to see the town. We went into the Cathedral which is very plain & uninteresting. We took a walk in the town & looked into the shop windows & then came home & dined at the table d’hôte at 6. In the eveng while we were sitting reading & writing the waiter brought the Bishop of Gibraltar’s (Harris) card wishing to [make] our acquaintance. It being late & we being tired we sent him word we should meet in the morng. Hill was much better & will have no difficulty in going on with us tomorrow.
