4 October 1871 — Marseilles
Wednesday. 4th October [1871]. We breakfasted at 8 & then Henry & I went out for a walk to see the town; we went in search of bird shops but after walking ½ round the harbour as far as the Mairie we gave it up. Coming back we found one but there were no birds there that I had not already got at Madrid so we did not get any. We then went in search of drawing room lamps & found a very nice shop in a street running out of the rue Paradis on the left. We ordered 2 & then went back to the hotel & started for the station a little after 9. We went Express as far as Tarascon where we changed for Cette. At Tarascon we got some luncheon & we got to Cette at 4.35. After leaving our things at the Hotel Barillon we took a walk to see the town. It is a busy little town entirely taken up by shipping & wine trading & has a salt water canal running thro’ it with houses on either side—giving it a faux air of Venice only it has a quay all along. At 6 we dined at the table d’hôte where we got a first rate bourgeois dinner & soon after went to bed–
