7 October 1871 — En route to Barcelona
Saturday. 7th October [1871]. We travelled on by dilly jolting & bumping along until at a little past 5 we found ourselves at Gerona station. We there got some coffee & at 6 got into the train for Barcelona & I slept nearly all the way till at 10 we got there. We went to the “Quatre Nations” & washed & breakfasted & then I laid down for a couple of hours. At 1 I got up & we went with the consul Mr Hannay to see the town. We went to the Exhibition & walked thro’ it. It is an Ex: of all the articles made here—& chiefly consists of cotton silk & wool manufactures. We took some coffee at the Restaurants & went to the Cathedral which is fine with an apse & the chief altar is surrounded with light gothic arches wh are very graceful. There are no pictures to be seen here. We looked into the patio of the Archive palace wh is just opposite & is a very curious old house. We walked down the Calle de los Platiros—but we saw nothing curious or interesting or ancient. We then drove to the Governors where Henry called & we went on to the Church of Sta Maria del Mar wh is a very fine church very lofty & simple. There were a few pictures but it was too late & dark to see them. We dined at the table d’hôte with the Bp & also met the American Consul Mr Ruggles & his wife & child who seem nice people. The Bp came & sat in our room & took coffee & we all gladly went early to bed.
