8 October 1871 — Barcelona
Sunday. 8th October [1871]. We went to church at 11 & the Bss preached & ad: the Com: I walked back to Hotel with Mrs Ruggles. Barcelona is a fine busy town & the principal street “The Rambla” in wh is the Hotel & very fine. It is the great promenade of the town; the walk is down the centre with trees planted on each side. On Sundays it is crowded. We had a visit from the V. Consul Mr Prat & then came the Bp to bid us adieu before he went to the Confirmation & we then dined & started for the station. On getting there we found the train goes by Madrid time wh is ½ hour after Barcelona time so we had an hour to wait wh was a bore. We took abt 4 hours to get to Tarragona & there Henry, Hill & I got into a 2 wheeled vehicle of the country & went on to the Hotel d’Europe leaving Giovanni to bring the luggage wh he did after some difficulty in explaining to the Carbinieri at the station that they could not open our luggage. The Master of the Hotel & his brother Italians were very civil & we were soon installed. I had some tea & soon went to bed.
