12 October 1871 — Valencia
Thursday. 12th October [1871]. It was tremendously hot, the hottest weather we have experienced this year. We went out early after breakfast to see the Church of S. Nicolas where on each side of the altar are 2 kind of recesses full of small pictures painted by Juanes & are the most beautiful by him that we have yet seen. We went also to an old house where there is a most picturesque & curious old door & in the patio wh was occupied by a coach builder there is a most charming old stone staircase; on the 1st floor are beautiful lofty rooms with a heavy old wooden ceiling. We then got a “tartana” & drove to “S. Juan” but could not get in as there was a service going on. Henry & Mr D., went to the “Colegio” where there are some fine things to see but ladies not being admitted I went home & was glad to do so the heat being very great. We lunched as soon as Henry returned & at 3 went to the station to take our journey to Madrid. Mr Dart & his cousin Mr Iwins saw us off & the Civil Govr came also. We had a pair of white doves with us & some gold fish Giovanni had bought to take home. We had a compartment to ourselves & had some food with us so that we were very comfortable & slept thro’ the night.
