17 January 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 17th January [1872]. Esq: gave me a drawing lesson– Directly after lunch I went out to see the Dss de la Torre to arrange abt the Christmas tree I am going to make. I found her in & we settled it was to be next Wednesday at 7 in eveng. I then went on to see Eliz: de Martino but she was out so I went to Mme Ettling. She was in so I sat a little while with her– I was out in an open carriage & tho’ it was very bright & sunny I felt chilly & came home early. The Ayltons & Mr Ash: came to tea. We dined with the Barrals—at 7—but did not sit down till near 8. They have a lovely house—only the dining room is a long way from the drawing rooms. De Blas took me in & I sat between him & the Russian Min: who was very agreeable & talkative; we stayed till abt 11. It was rather a tiresome affair, all diplomats except the Dragonettis.
