24 January 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 24th [January 1872]. I got up late & was [not] up to much so I sat in the back drawing room tying strings on the things that were to be hung up & abt 4 the Ayltons, Mme de Canitz & Mr Ash came & set to work to finish the tree which they did by about 6 o’cl: & they went home & we dined early as we had invited the children at 7½ ocl. It was 8½ & nearly 9 before they were all assembled & we had waited so long in hopes that the Dss de la Torre & her children would arrive & were obliged to give them up. The tree looked very nice the room being darkened & hung round with Chinese lanterns & the children were entranced never having seen one before– When it was over the children went en masse to eat & then went back & danced for another hour & went away at 10½ & I at once went to bed. The King gave Sagasta the Dissolution & revolution expected but the rain dispersed the crowd.
