23 January 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 23rd [January 1872]. I was in bed all day with a dreadful sick headache & we were obliged to send for Dr Brehm. Towards evening I got better. The Canitz came to dinner & Gayangos & Koudriaffsky & Mr Ash: Mme de C came to see me in bed as she had come to help to dress up the Christmas Trees which we are to have tomorrow. After dinner the Aylton girls came to help her & while the gentlemen played whist they did the tree—from my bed I could hear how merry they were over it & their shouts of laughter frequently woke me up.
