20 February 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 20th [February 1872]. Rather headachy. Eliz. came to luncheon & after lunch we went out together in the brougham– Called to enquire how Topete’s daughter was. It appears she is very ill with typhus & consumption. As Eliz had a bad headache I did not keep her out but left her at her house & then came home– Bauer had sent us his box to hear “Dinorah” so we dined early & went to the Opera but on arriving found that it had been put off & “No Lay funcion” advertised in large letters. We returned home & waiting till 10 sallied out again to go to the F. Embassy. Found there hardly any one I knew so I clutched hold of Mme de Vernouillet & we sat together till we went to the tea room & were there joined by Mme Ettling & Bss Haber. We did not remain there long.
