28 March 1872 — San Sebastian
Thursday. 28th [March 1872]. We breakfasted at 9½ Henry having previously been out walking—but I was late. We wrote & I copied for Henry all the morning till lunch time at 1½. At 2 we went out driving & had a delightful drive thro the country on the road to Zorans, but we turned back to a town called Hernani wh we drove thro’. It is the same quaint kind of a place as Renteria with the overhanging roofs & balconies. We passed a great many clean quiet good looking peasants going to mass– The women were in black with their hair hanging in 2 long plaits down their backs & were tall straight & good looking– The men in white shirts, a faja & no waistcoats & short jackets wh they carried slung on one shoulder with the sleeves dangling. We returned to San Sebastian by the lower road in the valley of the Urumea a nice stream by the side of which the Northern railway runs. We got back to the hotel abt 5 & took a stroll in the town. The shops were all closed & we went round the empty markets & sat on the parapet over the sea & watched the gulls darting abt after their supper & then went in. Mr Brunet (the Acting V. Con:) came with a telegram for Henry. We dined at 6½ & passed the eveng in writing for the post & went early to bed.
