27 March 1872 — San Sebastian
Wednesday. 27th [March 1872]. at 10.40 at San Sebastian & went to the Hotel de Londres. Found very good clean rooms & civil people. Heard that Lord & Lady Russell had been here for 2 or 3 days & left yesterday for Pau. We breakfasted on our arrival & then lay down to rest a little & at 3 started in a little basket carriage for a drive. At the door of the hotel a gentleman came up to speak to Henry who turned out to be Mr Hickman a merchant in the city who sends us out any thing we may want from England. We drove to a place called Pasajes—where there is a kind of harbour with a very narrow opening to the sea & wh it is said is going to be improved for the use of ships. It is a picturesque little place nestled into the hills just inside the rocks & close to the opening to the sea. We drove on further to a place called Renteria where there are large linen manufactories & a very picturesque old town it is– With large eaves to the houses nearly meeting across the streets & pretty carved balconies & stone houses with boldly carved arms over the doors wh shewed the houses must formerly have belonged to great families. The appearance of the country was quite spring like & there were primroses & cuckoo flowers in the hedges & all kinds of spring flowers & also all the trees in bud or in young leaf. We returned by the same route to our hotel—& got there abt 5. Mr Hickman came up & had a chat with Henry till he went at 6 to his dinner & we dined at ½ past. After dinner Mr H took Hy to the Club to see the papers & I went to bed.
