1 April 1872 — San Sebastian
Monday. 1st April [1872]. We got up early & started for Burgos by the 8.10 train. Had a carriage to ourselves & arrived there at 4.20. We went to the Fonda del Norte wh we found bad & dirty, however we thought it would do for one night. We sallied out first to the cathedral which is certainly very beautiful outside—but most disappointed inside. The whole effect is spoilt by the large pillars which support the lantern & the choir being very large & of a late date swamps the church. It is not to be compared either in picturesqueness or grandeur to the other Span. Cathedrals I know– It is the first day of the general election but there seems to be no stir in the streets– The shops are shut & the people holiday making as it is Easter Monday. We dined at 6. a regular Span: dinner with cocido & garbanzos but not uneatable– It was so cold that we gladly had a large fire in the evening & I went early to bed being tired.
