2 April 1872 — Burgos
Tuesday. 2nd April [1872]. We were up early & went directly after breakfast to the Cathedral. High Mass was going on & the music was very nice—the organ being well played & the music old fashioned. We got a sacristan to show us round the chapels in several of wh there are very fine tombs—& the cloisters wh are not very interesting. At 10½ we returned to the Inn & got a carriage wh took us to La Cartuja where there is an old convent– An old monk showed it to us– The church has beautiful alabaster tombs & a curious wood retablo– It was built by the Catholic Kings– The monastery is large & otherwise uninteresting—the old monk showed us a cell but they are all now empty & only 3 remain to take care of the place. It is situated in a most bleak spot at the top of the hill. We then drove back to the town & abt a mile on the side we came to Las Huelgas—a nunnery curious & old– When we got there the nuns were chanting & we saw them thro’ the grating– There were 2 novices all in white & rather pretty– They are all very rich & the Abbess has some peculiar rights by wh she reigns supreme not being under any bishop or Archbishop– We drove back to the Hotel to luncheon & then Henry & I went for a walk in the town. We went up the hill towards the castle to San Nicolas but we could not get in. We went on to San Esteban—where we got in but there was not much to see so we returned to the Cathedral. All the afternoon we were so pestered by rude boys that it quite spoilt ones pleasure & made one cross. I never saw any place so full of beggars & idle children– We went back to the hotel & read & worked & dined in our own rooms at 7½ & soon had to go to the station. At 10.5 we got into the train & settled for the night.
