13 April 1872 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 13th [April 1872]. The Col: came down again & we had a whole morning in the court yard sowing seeds &c– After dinner I went to dress for a dance at Lindstrand (the Swedish Minister’s) & while my hair was being dressed Mrs Beale rushed in to say there was a great fire. I opened my window & saw nothing but a great red light all over the Palace, the Convent of the Encarnacion opposite the Senate. I thrust on a dressing gown and rushed up to the tower on the top of the house to see the fire. We found it was a church Sto Tomas which was on fire. It was a beautiful sight the whole dome was enveloped in flames & the outlines of the ribs were marked in fire. I stayed up there a long time & wanted to stay to see the crash of the dome but I had to go to dress & we went off to Lindstrand’s. It is a pretty little apartment but very small for dancing. We left early. | |
