4 May 1872 — Madrid
Saturday. 4th [May 1872]. Espinosa conducted the Hambros & me to the Royal stables where we saw all the horses, carriages & harnesses– There are above 100 horses for guard use, 50 mules, besides the King’s own particular riding & driving horses which are kept apart– The carriages are kept in an enormous riding school– There are all the King’s own carriages & those of the Ex Queen besides some very curious old ones presented by Napoleon 1st & an old ebony one said to have belonged to Juana la Loca—but wh is probably Louis XV. The harness is magnificently kept in glass cases—but the man who shewed them to us kept up a running grumble about the fleur de lys in the crests wh the harness having been substituted for the cross of Savoy in which Espinosa join as chorus– We spent more than 2 hours seeing these things & got home to luncheon– Henry & I took a ride in the Fuente—but did not stay out long having to be back early to dress as we all went to dine with the Bauers– We had paté de foie gras—in the shape of dominoes & an ice at the end in the shape of a work box with scissors &c in cakes the pink pincushion of ice & the exterior of nougat.
