18 May 1872 — Granada | |
Saturday. 18th [May 1872]. We breakfasted at 8—but found Mrs Burr had gone out sketching an hour before. Susan & I went to sketch the Gate de Judicia sitting on a wall. It being my first attempt at a water color sketch the result, as might be expected, was feeble—however it amused us very much. Hill carried our things for us & Henry joined us & read his Times sitting with us, every now & then throwing in a hint or suggestion. At 2 we went in to luncheon & afterwards drove down into the town to call on old Mme Riaño & to see the Fortuny’s. Found them in & went up to see his studio. He has several pictures now on hand—chiefly the same as he was at when we were at Granada last year—a study of flowers in the garden of the Adarves—of the Alhambra with slaves bathing in the estanque– He is also doing a magnificent water color of a Moor praying on a colored carpet in Sta Maria la Blanca at Toledo. He showed us the magnificent Arab vase he has bought like the one in the Alhambra & a portion of a 2nd wh [he] has also lately bought & wh stands in the middle of his patio full of flowers. It was very cold today. | |
