30 May 1872 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 30th [May 1872]. Sat with Susan while she remained in bed waiting for Brehm & arranging my diamonds & things for the Court wh was held today being the King’s birthday. Just as I was going to dress came a message to say the Queen was ill & the ladys were not to go to Court– As Hill had made my train since our return yesterday she was, of course, furious but I was much relieved as Henry was away 3 hours wh would have been very fatiguing. In the afternoon I went out walking with Mme Dentoni to see Mme Dragonetti—found her laid up in bed from a mishap she had while we were away. She was very unhappy about it. From there we went on to Mrs Hunt whom we found in the same case—but up tho’ very unwell. Henry dined at the Palace there being a great banquet to celebrate the King’s birthday. He says they dined in the Ballroom or sala de la Columnas & sat down abt 8 o– It was splendidly done & there was music played & choruses sung. | |
