10 June 1872 — Madrid
Monday. 10th June [1872]. I went off at 11 to breakfast with the Dss who is now at the Presidencia. I found her preparing to go to the Queen having suddenly been sent for—so I only stayed breakfast & left at once. I saw that she had not really settled herself at the Presidencia & she said it was not worthwhile doing so as Serrano might not remain Prime Minister long & even yesterday had threatened to resign. I said “In that case I suppose the King must go.” She said, “I think he will have to go sooner or later!” I returned home & spent the rest of the day making a white tulle bonnet. Mme de Molins called– The Aylton girls came to tea. Mr Goschen dined with us & we then went to Price’s circus– The Riaños with their boy joined us. We saw a charming little girl ride very well while doing the hoop business & even on a trotting horse. There were two wonderful Indians on the tight rope. One walked on stilts, tied to his ancle, composed of small crooked horns—& the other walked & danced with 5 great jars balanced on his head. We got home late being 12½.
