12 June 1872 — Madrid
Wednesday. 12th [June 1872]. I breakfasted in bed & got up latish. I drew almost all the morning. After luncheon while Susan & I were working Henry burst in to say Serrano’s Govt was out– He had wished the King to sign a decree putting aside the constitution. On HM refusing to do it he at once resigned. Zorilla having retired—there seems no one for the King to turn to & he will probably go back to Italy. Susan read to me Mrs Jerningham Journal wh is very amusing—a story in verse—& very short– At 5½ Hy & Mr Hambro went out riding. At 6 Susan & I went out driving. I called on Dragonettis—found them very discouraged. We took a turn in the Fuente & came home to dinner. Afterwards went to the concert in the Retiro gardens—a thunderstorm came on & we rushed home. We had taken the Aylton girls with us—we just got home in time when the dust storm began—then rain & wind & very vivid lightning– The storm abated & we went to bed—but it rose again abt 3—& disturbed our sleep.
