13 June 1872 — Madrid
Thursday. 13th [June 1872]. Susan went out with Mr Hambro. I had a lesson of Esq: & wrote for Henry but about 12 I was obliged to go & lie down on the sofa in the dark with a headache. I laid there all the afternoon till Susan came in & said she had been to Bauer’s & while there Bauer had received news that Zorilla & the Radical party had accepted office. I did not go to dinner. Mr Goschen dined with Mr Hambro & they started together for a week in Andalusia. I got up abt 9 & dressed to go to the Dss de la Torre’s it being her fête day. Henry was very anxious we should go. On arriving at the Presidencia we found very few people– The Dss in a lovely blue & pink gown, only waiting for the Marshal to return from a meeting to go back to their small house in the Barrio Salamanca. We stayed a very short time–
