14 June 1872 — Madrid | |
Friday. 14th June [1872]. Susan went out walking with Emilia. The Bauer children came to see me as they are all off to Paris tomorrow. I drew & wrote for Henry & was very busy. In the afternoon Susan read to me out of Lorna Doone & I worked for her. At 6 I went out riding with Henry & Susan drove with Emilia. We rode round by the Palace & going up the Calle Arenal met the demonstration in favor of the Zorilla Govt coming towards the Palace– There were about 5 to 6000 men walking very orderly & pretty respectably dressed with a few flags & a banner with “Que venga Zorilla” & another “Viva el Ministerio Radical”. After stopping in front of the Palace & giving a few faint vivas they went on their way & soon dispersed. We rode on afterwards to the Fuente & went there & back without seeing further sign of the demonstration. | |
