18 June 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 18th [June 1872]. The heat was very great. Arranged the back drawing room to sit in instead of my boudoir this was a great exertion & very exhausting, so I laid on the sofa all the morning while Susan read “Lorna” to me. I copied for Henry in the afternoon. Had a visit from the Byrnes who go to England today & take despatches for Henry– Dragonetti also called & later Mr Underdown who arrived this morning. We dined at 6½ & went out driving at 7½. Left cards—drove in the Fuente & then in the Prado– There were a great many people there & Henry & Susan got out & walked while I drove up & down. At 9 we went to the French Embassy where H & I paid a visit & sent Susan home– We found the aged couple alone but the Austrian chargé d’affaires joined us tho’ he did not add to the brilliancy of the conversation. We walked home—had some tea & went to bed–
