26 June 1872 — Madrid | |
Wednesday. 26th June [1872]. Lesson of Esq: Wrote all the morng. Fitch came to garden in the patio & to have a chat with me. Mendez Leal called. Isabel Silvela came & dined with us & afterwards she drove out with me, I going to call on the Dragonettis, & we then went to the Concert at the Retiro where Henry met us. We there met crowds of people & gave up Isabel to her parents– We sat with the Bernars also & the King was there walking round with his ADCs. At 11 Henry & I took up our departure & at the entrance were saying good night to Monteverde when I saw 2 ladies in black & clutched Henry & said “The Queen” with Css Almina. I sank back in confusion being in grass green attire when I ought to have been in “tuto de rigor” [sic] for the Archduchess Sofia & we went home. | |
