18 July 1872 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Thursday. 18th [July 1872]. We all left Dorking by an 11 o’cl train. On our arrival I went to Ovington Gardens to ask to see Connie who had an infant born yesterday & then we went on to lunch at Langham House to meet Cole C.B., Sir Wm Boxall & Lady Eastlake, Monty also– Afterwards I went out driving with Adeline & went to tea with her. We dined with the Granvilles & I sat between Mr C. Forbes & Col. Ponsonby (Equerry to the Q) who was very pleasant. Lady Granville was very kind & pleasant– In the eveng came the Duc de Richelieu—a talkative old man with a hook nose & iron grey hair who seems to know all society. After dinner we drove down to Blackheath to stay with Henry’s mother. En route our horse came down on a train rail—luckily nothing was broken & it did not detain us more than 10 minutes.
