19 July 1872 — Blackheath
Friday. 19th July [1872]. Henry went up to town & came back by 5. After lunch I & the Madre took a drive, we went to Blackheath village, Eltham & round home by Shooter’s Hill– We dined at 7.30 with the George Glyns in Carlton Terrace. Gladstone took me to dinner. We met the Gladstones, Mr Bruce & Rachel, Lord Charles Russell & a Mr Forster. We had a very amusing dinner but it was short as Gladstone & Lord C. R. & Mr Glyn had to rush off to the house. The rest of us sat out on the terrace over the Park chatting till 10.30 all except Mrs Gladstone who went off to her own house (next door) being very tired.
