25 September 1872 — Bayonne
Wednesday. 25th September [1872]. Henry, Ld S & I went off for a walk after breakfast. It began to rain but we trudged on to the cathedral & into the cloisters which are still under repair. We then crossed the river & got to another fine church—& then hurried back to the hotel—had luncheon & a visit from old Mr Graham (Consul) & his wife. We went to station & left by 12.35 for Madrid. We got thro’ at Irun without trouble & got a compartment to ourselves. We dined at Miranda. There was a great fuss as some Americans insisted upon getting into the ladies’ compartment. Hy expostulated with them & they refused to move & had to be dragged out by the Guardia Civiles. At Burgos the Somers stayed the night but we went on. I had a curious adventure with an air cushion. On getting out at one station I dragged out my cushion as I supposed for I could not find it & I gave it up for lost. Abt 2 stations on we were roused & requested to get out as our carriage was broken– While standing on the platform waiting for another carriage to be put on I looked at a heap of wraps &c wh belonged to people who had had to get out of the next compartment to us. There I spied my cushion. I told Hy who took it up & said “To whom does this belong”—a man quietly answered “Serà de Ld” wh of course it was & I was glad to recover my property.
